Circular Solutions in Hospitality

Climate Conversations hosts a monthly live conversation with guest speakers who are working to address the climate crisis in Ventura County. Our July speaker was Agromin, a local business based in Oxnard and California's largest organic waste composter.

They discussed the evolution of California state laws surrounding food waste mitigation efforts and how they incorporate these goals into their practices. Their actions include collecting food scraps from restaurants, rapidly processing them in an on-site digester, and then redistributing the finished product to local gardens and yards.

I compiled our conversation highlights into a post for our media pages and illustrated simple graphics to elevate audience members' understanding of methane emissions and soil nutrient restoration.

Plastic Free July

In July, I led Climate Conversations' effort to encourage our online audience to participate in Plastic Free July, a global movement aimed at raising awareness around plastic consumption. In support of this campaign, I created a trash audit sheet that participants could use to identify areas in their lives where they could either reduce their plastic consumption or find reusable/recyclable/compostable alternatives. These small but meaningful acts of individual progress accumulate into group action.

I promoted a theme each week on our social media pages to offer productive, low-waste substitute ideas. I began with the kitchen and progressed to other areas where I noticed myself producing avoidable waste. These media posts were intended to provoke thought and spark creative solutions. I emphasized that my intent was not to push anyone to strive for perfection; instead, I aimed to empower community members to consume less and prioritize quality items over disposable products.
